Government Official Assures Explanation of Reasons Behind Hotel Collapse on Majorca
Officials are currently investigating the incident where a restaurant collapsed in Mallorca, killing four people and injuring 16 others. According to regional minister for urban planning, Óscar Fidalgo, they will determine what went wrong and how it happened. He shared with the "Diario de Mallorca" news platform that they are reviewing all permits for structural changes as well as operating licenses to shed light on the mishap.
On the fateful evening of the incident, twenty-year-old and thirty-year-old females from Germany, a Spanish woman aged twenty-three, and a Senegalese man aged forty-four lost their lives. Among the injured, six have already been released from the hospital while five still linger in critical condition.
The incident sparked discussions on Mallorca about potential structural flaws. There were debates on whether the heavy occupancy of the second-floor balcony terrace of Medusa Beach Club, which sources claimed was the first level to give way, could have triggered the collapse. An early examination by Palma's fire chief, Eder García, revealed that the overloading of the second floor might have contributed to the accident.
However, Fidalgo declined to speculate on the cause of the collapse. In his statement, he insisted that they were looking into everything but could not make any assumptions based on the accessible information they had at the moment. The newspaper "Última Hora" also reported, citing officials, that the building had recently been subjected to a structural inspection. The results, the paper said, revealed "minor issues" that didn't weaken the structure. But it was mentioned that the balcony terrace of the second floor was declared as "inaccessible".
