Girl identifies sexual assault suspect through his glare

Christian B., a German man, is facing legal proceedings for a murder case and a rape trial. In the rape trial, the key focus is whether an alleged victim could have identified the accused by his eyes during a nighttime instance. A 40-year-old Irish woman testified that the man had "very piercing blue eyes" that left a lasting impression on her.

During the rape trial against Christian B., who is also under suspicion in the Maddie case, the central inquiry revolved around whether an alleged victim could have recognized the accused by his eyes during the dark hours. The witness shared in Braunschweig District Court, "They were simply very piercing blue eyes." This individual was the only one present in the room with her at that time. "The eyes were the only thing I could see. They made a strong impression on me," said the Irish woman.

At the criminal court the day prior, the Irish woman claimed to be capable of recognizing the 47-year-old defendant through his blue eyes. In June 2020, German authorities unexpectedly announced their inquiry into the Maddie case against a sex offender with previous convictions, suspected of murder. Photos of the accused then quickly surfaced online - even without eye-area pixelation.

The Irish woman is a crucial witness in the case against the 47-year-old German due to being the only known of three alleged rape victims. Testimonies mention two other possible assaults caught on video, yet these clips have vanished, and prospective victims could not be traced. Additionally, the alleged perpetrator is accused of two cases of child sexual abuse. These crimes are said to have occurred in Portugal.

"It's the hue, the strength"

Nevertheless, the greatest international fascination with the trial is owed to the fact that B. is also suspected of murder in the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann, who vanished from a Portuguese holiday destination in 2007. While Maddie is an ever-present subject in Braunschweig, it is not officially part of the ongoing trial. Overall, the presumption of innocence still applies.

The Irish woman has persistent health issues nearly two decades after the attack. In a diagnosis, she was informed that she suffers from a recurring post-traumatic disorder. Yet, the examination process repeatedly questioned her ability to identify the eye area: "It's the hue, the strength," she responded. "His eyes, I believe this man is the perpetrator," stated the Irish woman at the conclusion of the almost two-day interrogation.

Toward the end of the trial day, the defense demanded an ophthalmologist's report to demonstrate, in part, that it's not possible to identify the eye color reliably in poor lighting conditions at night. The trial resumes on Friday.
