Hapag-Lloyd shipping company - German container ship attacked in the Red Sea
A container ship operated by the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has been shot at in the Red Sea. The "Al Jasrah" was damaged in the attack in the strait between Yemen and Djibouti, but there were no casualties, a spokesman for the Hamburg-based shipping company told the news agency DPA on Friday.
A spokesman for the US Department of Defense told the AFP news agency that the freighter had been hit by a projectile fired from a region in Yemen controlled by the Huthi militia. However, the shipping company spokesperson was initially unable to provide any information on the origin of the shelling. Yemeni Huthi rebels had recently attacked ships in the Red Sea. It was only on Thursday that German shipowners demanded protective measures from the German government and the EU. With a good 1,800 ships, the German merchant fleet is the seventh largest among the world's major merchant fleets.
Attack on Hapag-Lloyd freighter - fire on board
According to the shipping company, the freighter had sailed from Piraeus in Greece through the Suez Canal and was heading for Singapore. According to the maritime security company Ambrey, a fire broke out on the ship "Al Jasrah" after the attack north of the port city of Motscha. A container fell into the sea. "There is material damage on board, the crew is unharmed," said the Hapag-Lloyd spokesman. He was initially unable to provide details of the damage. However, the ship was able to continue its journey.
Against the backdrop of the Gaza war, the Yemeni rebels see ships in the Red Sea heading for Israel as a "legitimate target".
