Germany's Federal Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, is making a trip to France to join in the 80th-anniversary celebration of D-Day on June 6th. Other prominent figures, including Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, are expected to attend as well, according to a news release by his deputy spokesperson, Wolfgang Büchner.
President Joe Biden from the United States has also confirmed his attendance. The event is set to take place at Omaha Beach in Normandy in the afternoon on Thursday. A reception will follow for the attending dignitaries.
The invasion of the Allied forces on France's northern coast in 1944 was a defining moment in World War II, culminating in Germany's ultimate defeat. During this campaign, 7,000 vessels transported approximately 132,700 troops, primarily from the United States, Great Britain, and Canada, to the Normandy region.
