A German military officer was sentenced to three and a half years in prison in Düsseldorf for spying for Russia. The Düsseldorf Regional Court found the 54-year-old man guilty of engaging in espionage activities, thus supporting the prosecutor's request.

The captain admitted to his guilt during the proceedings. Prosecutors claimed that this individual had "loyally served Russia" to give the Russian armed forces an advantage.

He had revealed classified military information and was criticized by the prosecutor's representative. The 54-year-old had been an agent for a state known for its ruthlessness and aggression.

At approximately the same time, he joined the AfD. If he had disclosed both military and state secrets, he would have faced life imprisonment.

His defense attorney stated that his client had ruined everything in just four days that he had worked hard to achieve as a dedicated professional soldier: "Four days of betrayal, during which he crossed the line. Four days of complete failure."

His media consumption had shifted to Telegram and TikTok. In these platforms, he had become addicted to false information and out-of-context quotes. He had been disconnected from reality for some time. He has since left the AfD.

The captain asserted that the fear of a nuclear escalation of the Ukraine war had driven him. "It's the biggest mistake I've ever made in my life," he stated in his final statement. A depression, due to chronic overwork, had impaired his rational thinking.

Agents from the Federal Criminal Police Office arrested the man on August 9 in Koblenz. He has been in pre-trial detention ever since.

  6. Parallel investigations, processes, and judgments in both the civil and military spheres could potentially lead to further crackdowns on espionage activities and deterrence measures within Germany and other allied forces.
  7. In Russia, it is common for spies and military officers to face severe consequences for acts of espionage or betrayal, so this German officer's future in Russian territories remains uncertain following his three and a half-year imprisonment sentence in Germany.
