Sandra Hüller - From Suhl to the Golden Globes
2023 is the year of Sandra Hüller (45). And not just in Germany. On Monday, the German actress was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her tour de force in the French legal drama "Anatomy of a Case".
A day earlier, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association had named Hüller Actress of the Year. For "Anatomy of a Case" and the British concentration camp drama "The Zone of Interest". In the latter, she plays Hedwig Höß, the wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höß. Just one day earlier, Sandra Hüller won the European Film Award in Berlin for "Anatomy of a Case". The exceptional actress was also in the running for "Zone of Interest". The first person to be nominated twice in an acting category.
Successful career in the theater
Sandra Hüller was born in Suhl in Thuringia in 1978, the daughter of a teacher couple. She acted at school and took part in private workshops. After graduating from high school, she studied at the renowned Ernst Busch drama school in Berlin. She was then a member of ensembles in Jena, Leipzig, Basel, Munich and Bochum.
A normal theater career. Even if it has been very successful. Sandra Hüller has been named Actress of the Year four times in the important critics' poll conducted by the trade journal "Theater heute". A record for women.
From "Requiem" to "Toni Erdmann": a film career with quantum leaps
Her first leading role in a feature film immediately attracts a lot of attention. In "Requiem" in 2005, she played a young woman who believes she is possessed by the devil. She was immediately awarded the German Film Prize. The mother of a daughter went on to establish herself as a reliable leading and supporting actress in German film and television.
Then, in 2016, her late and surprising international breakthrough: Sandra Hüller plays the female lead in"Toni Erdmann". At the Cannes Film Festival, the tragicomedy caused a buzz in the global press. A nomination for Best Non-English Language Film follows. It was also included in the German entry for the 2022 Oscars, "Ich bin dein Mensch".
Next step Oscar nomination?
Sandra Hüller is now also being cast in international (co-)productions. For example, in the space film "Proxima" alongside French actress Eva Green (43) and US star Matt Dillon (59). Or in "Sibyl - Therapie zwecklos" by French actress Justine Triet (45). The filmmaker is so enthusiastic about the German that she wrote the lead role in "Anatomy of a Case" to suit her. The rest is history.
What is the next step for the exceptional actress? First of all, an Oscar nomination is probably due in January 2024.
