- For "Lord of the Rings", there were free sandwiches.
Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett has revealed that she was underpaid for her role in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The 55-year-old, who portrayed the elf Galadriel in the fantasy films, discussed salaries and gently critiqued her industry during an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live."
Host Andy Cohen asked the Oscar winner which film she received the biggest paycheck for, suggesting "The Lord of the Rings." "Are you kidding?" Blanchett replied. "I basically got paid in sandwiches." She also joked that she got to keep her elf ears.
"The Lord of the Rings" trilogy (2001-2003), directed by Peter Jackson, is one of the most successful film series of all time, grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide. However, at the time, it was not common for actors to receive a share of the profits, Blanchett explained. She also noted that women in Hollywood "don't get as much money as you think."
Blanchett is not the first to speak out about being underpaid for successful films. In 2019, Legolas actor Orlando Bloom revealed that he was paid just $175,000 for all three films combined.
Cate Blanchett's underpaid salary for her iconic role as Galadriel in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy sparked conversations about pay inequity among Hollywood actresses. Her co-star Orlando Bloom also acknowledged being underpaid for his role as Legolas.
