Florence Pugh shares that her physique experienced a minor form of distress as a consequence of balding for her film part.
The 28-year-old actress had to cut her locks for the heart-wrenching romance film "We Live in Time," where she shares screen time with British actor Andrew Garfield.
The film narrates their 10-year-long relationship, which takes a drastic turn following a medical diagnosis.
In an interview with British Vogue published on Wednesday, Pugh admitted that the drastic haircut had both a physical and emotional impact on her.
"In many cultures, hair is considered the most valuable part of the body; it's where we store our memories, dreams, and past. Cutting it felt strange," said Pugh, who has previously starred in "Oppenheimer," "Dune: Part Two," and "Little Women."
"My scalp was super-sensitive, and everyone seemed eager to touch it. My body reacted strangely to it. I was always cold," Pugh explained, playing the role of a figure skater-turned-chef named Almut.
Garfield, her co-star, was the one who shaved her head for the movie. He told the magazine that he felt honored to have been given the opportunity, although he was nervous.
"What if I somehow damaged the head of one of the finest actors of her generation? It was terrifying, but in the end, it was a very intimate and beautiful scene to film," Garfield said, praising Pugh's perfectly shaped cranium.
Pugh revealed that this role came at a significant point in her career.
"I was going through a lot of personal changes and transformations simultaneously," she said. "It felt like I was no longer the same person. I was embracing this new phase in my life."
Pugh also disclosed that she is currently in a new relationship, but chose not to reveal her partner's identity.
"We're figuring it out. And for the first time, I'm not jumping on a rollercoaster. I'm giving it time to develop naturally," she said.
Her past relationship with actor Zach Braff attracted attention due to their 21-year age difference. In an interview with the Sunday Times in 2021, Pugh defended their relationship against criticism, saying, "It's my life. I'm not living it to please others or to make headlines."
When asked about their relationship in the latest interview, Pugh said, "Mine and Zach's relationship was initially quite private, but it became nasty, and I could see the toll it was taking on us both. That's when I spoke out. I have a duty to protect the people I care about."
"It's not pleasant knowing that people are saying horrible things about someone I love. I felt it was necessary to talk about it. Any relationship in the public eye is going to be challenging," she concluded.
After experiencing the drastic change, Pugh continued to take on prominent roles in the entertainment industry, starring in films like "Oppenheimer" and "Dune: Part Two."
Despite the intense scenes and transformations in her films, the entertainment world remained fascinated by her personal life and relationships.
