Flight attendant sustains spinal injury due to intense air turbulence.
In a short span of time, three incidents involving severe turbulence have taken place.
Recently, during a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Izmir, one of the flight attendants sustained injuries due to the unexpected air currents. Upon receiving the warning from the pilot, it was too late for her to fasten her seatbelt. She was thrown against the ceiling of the aircraft and later fell onto the hard floor, resulting in a broken spine.
The newspaper "Hürriyet" reported that there was a sudden loss of altitude, making it impossible for the flight attendant to secure her seatbelt on time. However, the crash wasn't as severe as others that had happened in recent days. Less than a week ago, there was a dramatic drop in a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin, seriously injuries 12 people. Before that incident, a flight from Singapore to London experienced turbulences, leading to approximately a hundred individuals being injured, many of them in their skull, brain and spine. A 73-year-old British man also lost his life, though the exact cause of death remains unclear.
As a result, the airline had to reinforce the rules on wearing seatbelts. The latest injury took place on a domestic Turkish flight. Following the incidents, passengers became more anxious and uneasy during flights. The injured flight attendant was taken to the hospital right after landing. Her injuries were confirmed to be a broken vertebrae.
The Importance of Wearing Seatbelts
The incidents above emphasize the significance of wearing seatbelts throughout the duration of a flight. Over a decade, the FAA in the U.S reported about 163 individuals suffering from serious injuries due to turbulence. Majority of these incidents were with the crew.
A pilot experienced in the cockpit union emphasized how similar the experience of driving through a pothole at 900 km/h is, urging everyone not to unclip their seatbelts under any circumstance.

In response to these harrowing incidents, Turkish Airlines has emphasized the importance of adhering to seatbelt regulations during air travel. Despite flying with Turkish Airlines, known for its fleet of airplanes, international and domestic, passengers are now more vigilant about their safety. For instance, a flight attendant recently suffered a broken vertebrae due to turbulence during a domestic flight, highlighting the necessity of wearing seatbelts throughout the journey.
