Stooge of the Assad regime - Five suspected Syrian war criminals arrested in Germany

The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has arrested five suspected Syrian war criminals in Germany. They are accused of participating in the killing and attempted killing of civilians on behalf of the Syrian regime led by Bashar al-Assad, according to the prosecutor's office in Karlsruhe. In 2012, the arrested individuals were involved in the violent suppression of a demonstration where at least six people were killed.

Five suspected Syrian war criminals

Among those arrested at various locations in Germany are the stateless Syrian Palestinians Jihad A., Mahmoud A., Sameer S., and Wael S., as well as the Syrian national Mazhar J. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office accuses all five suspects of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder and attempted murder.

Four of them are also charged with torture. The four suspected individuals are said to have joined the armed militia "Free Palestine Movement" (FPM) in Syria as early as 2011, which controlled a neighborhood in the capital Damascus on behalf of the Syrian regime. The neighborhood of Jarmuk is said to have originated from a Palestinian refugee camp and was completely sealed off from July 2013.

The arrested individuals are accused of participating in the violent suppression of a peaceful demonstration against the Syrian government in 2012 and shooting at demonstrators. At least six people were reportedly killed as a result. At checkpoints, they are also accused of physically assaulting civilians. "The victims were beaten in the head with fists and rifle butts or treated with their feet," the highest German prosecutor's office stated further.

Arrests also in Sweden

The arrests on Wednesday reportedly took place in Berlin, Frankenthal in Rhineland-Palatinate, and Boizenburg in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The state criminal offices of Berlin, Rhineland-Palatinate, Schleswig-Holstein, and North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as the Federal Criminal Police Office and Europol, were reportedly supportive of the efforts. In Essen, the premises of another suspect were also searched, who was on the run at the time.

Simultaneously, three more persons were arrested in Sweden. The Swedish Prosecutor's Office stated that there is a suspicion of crimes against international law committed in Syria in 2012. The Prosecutor's Office did not provide further details about the arrested individuals. However, it became clear from the statements of the Federal Prosecutor General that they are three more suspected members of the FPM militia who are said to have participated in the suppression of the demonstration in July 2012.

The arrested individuals in Germany will now be presented to the investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice, who will issue the arrest warrant and decide on remand in custody. Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann stated, "These men have to reckon with an indictment for crimes against humanity and war crimes in Germany. I would like to express my gratitude to all involved state criminal offices and our Swedish partners for their excellent cooperation."

The five individuals arrested in Germany are accused of supporting the Assad regime, specifically led by Bashar al-Assad in Syria, where they allegedly participated in crimes against humanity and war crimes, including the killing and attempted killing of civilians. One of the places where they were involved in suppressing a demonstration was the Jarmuk neighborhood in Damascus, a Palestinian refugee camp.

Sweden also made arrests in relation to the same case, with the Swedish Prosecutor's Office suspecting three individuals of committing crimes against international law in Syria during the year 2012. These individuals are believed to be additional members of the Free Palestine Movement (FPM) militia, accused of participating in the suppression of a demonstration in July 2012.
