Five individuals killed and another person hurt during a violent incident in Acapulco.
Another day, another tragedy in Acapulco, Mexico. This time around, five individuals have fallen prey to a brutal attack carried out by armed men. Four men and one woman were shot dead in an indoor market near the beachside promenade, where tourists browse through handicrafts. Another person was left injured in the shooting that took place on a Thursday.
The central Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located, is plagued by gang violence. Just a couple of days ago, a terrible sight was discovered in the very same city - 10 dead bodies lying on the streets of Mexico's Pacific coast. The four men and two women had been brutally thrown out of a vehicle after their lives were taken.
Mexico's drug cartels have been waging a ferocious war for years now, fighting for control over the drug trade in the US. Mexico's authorities reported that last year ended with a staggering 1890 killings in conflicts between these criminal organizations. The violence has claimed more than 450,000 lives in the country since 2006, when military operations against the cartels were initiated. Additionally, it's believed that around 100,000 people are missing.
The disconcerting rates of crime in Mexico are a significant issue heading into the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections on June 2nd. Left-wing candidate of the incumbent President Andres Manuel López Obrador, Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasizes on addressing the root causes of crime and bringing about change. On the other hand, Xóchitl Gálvez, representing the center-right, is promoting harsher measures against criminals.
