Final opportunity to operate a Cupra Formentor VZ5 – potentially not repeating.

For now, you can still experience the potent five-cylinder energy in a Cupra, but how long this will persist remains uncertain. ntv.de has now tested a slightly enhanced variant of the Cupra Formentor VZ5 with more power.

What do you do when performance becomes monotonous? Add even more performance, that's what Cupra concluded. In collaboration with the tuner Abt, they have produced an even more potent Cupra Formentor. Instead of 390, now 450 horses thunder beneath the sculpted hood. However, the real appeal isn't just about extra power. What truly sets this Cupra apart is how it delivers that power.

The Abt package causes the Formentor to sink further, decreasing by 35mm from its initial position. Yet, the vehicle's suspension is titrated manually to modify its height.

There's neither a electric motor hidden beneath the bodywork nor a common two-liter four-cylinder engine like the EA888 utilized across the Volkswagen Group. No, Cupra continues to offer its customers a racy five-cylinder engine. It's the same powertrain found in the spirited Audi RS3 and RSQ3 models. The distinction between a four- and five-cylinder engine is quite obvious. A four-cylinder engine can be made to sound powerful with the correct exhaust system, which engineers accomplish skillfully with potent Golfs adorned with the "GTI" or "R" badge. The Cupra Formentor VZ also features a two-liter engine. Yet, it fails to replicate the deep, rumbling bass that resonates a bit grouchily in the lower RPM range and develops into a throaty growl towards the end of the tachometer. The more robust engine technology used here is notably different from common engine technology, particularly when it comes to acoustics.

The five-cylinder's performance is daunting

Enhanced sewing lends an air of sophistication to the Cupra Formentor's interior.

As for performance, there are no complaints. Not with the standard 2.5-liter turbocharged engine and even less so with the enhanced Abt version. It dominates the compact SUV, which weighs roughly 1.7 tons, and swiftly propels it forward with command. As soon as the turbocharger receives the necessary pressure from the exhaust stream, the passengers' backs are glued to the marked sports seats. The all-wheel-drive vehicle reaches highway speed in just 4.2 seconds. Speaking of all-wheel drive: The 530 Newton meters are equally distributed to both axles, which is imperative. Even now, you can feel the loss of traction when deploying the power more aggressively.

The backseat of the Cupra Formentor provides plenty of space for leg comfort.

Whether Abt's developers have over-engineered the slightly stiffer and adjustable suspension (the test vehicle starts 35 millimeters lower) is debatable. However, the Spaniard navigates road imperfections with greater precision than the series model. The dampers can be adjusted in hardness, but they lean towards the firmer side. In return, the lateral performance is improved, and the relatively low 1.51-meter-high SUV maneuvers swifty around sharp corners and maintains its neutrality for an extended period.

Expanded storage capacity enhances the athlete's utility.

Is this level of sporty suspension tolerable over long distances? It's manageable on a well-maintained highway. If it's empty and you're still on German soil, you can have fun in the upper speed range. By the way, the VZ5 outperforms its weaker four-cylinder VZ sibling. And the Abt takes it further, crushing the 250 km/h speed limit.

Familiar with the color 'Sternrubin' in the Porsche realm? It's generally used as a wrap, but it harmoniously complements the vehicle.

The VZ5 is similarly equipped with practicality

Beyond performance, the 4.47-meter long top Formentor shares many similarities with its less powerful siblings, offering ample space (even for luggage with approximately 1500 liters of cargo volume) and comprehensive infotainment features. However, Cupra needs to enhance its software, as the touchscreen applications operate slowly.

Those interested in driving a VZ5 and also want the Abt package must currently rely on existing stock. This powerful Spanish model isn't exactly cheap, with a price tag of around 80,000 euros, including the tuning package. While the VZ5 doesn't skimp on technology features, such as the functional adaptive cruise control, it's still a significant investment.

Many interested buyers might be wondering if the five-cylinder engine will be reintroduced, perhaps for the facelift version of the Formentor. Camouflaged development vehicles have already been spotted, suggesting Cupra's interest. The best way to encourage the manufacturer is through customer demand. Now it's your turn.

The Cupra Formentor VZ5 showcases its unique selling point with its five-cylinder engine, identical to those in renowned Audi RS3 and RSQ3 model's engine bays. This engine provides a distinct sound character compared to common four-cylinder options, offering a deep, rumbling bass in the lower RPM range.

To fully enjoy the potent performance of the Cupra Formentor VZ5, consider its marked sports seats, ensuring a secure grip during high-speed acceleration. These seats are essential accessory for those who appreciate the daunting power of the five-cylinder engine model.
