Fico has emerged from danger following the assault.
Slovakian Prime Minister Fico's injuries are severe, with six hours of surgery required - this is how critical his condition is following the shooting incident. Fico's deputy confirmed that the 59-year-old will survive the attack, but it might take weeks for him to recover.
The health of Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico appears to have stabilized. Deputies Robert Kalinak and Milan Urbani of the clinic in Banska Bystrica shared this news with TASR. The man who attacked Fico is a 71-year-old individual who fired shots at the leader on Wednesday. He was quickly apprehended after committing the crime.
Milan Urbani offered an update on Sunday, stating, "The medical consultation this morning advises us to state that the patient is not in a life-threatening condition. However, his state remains very serious, and he will need a considerable amount of time and rest to heal." Fico received a five-hour emergency procedure in the central Slovakian town of Banska Bystrica's hospital after being shot. This was followed by a further two-hour operation on Friday.
Despite these setbacks, Kalinak, who also serves as the Minister of Defense, doesn't plan to move Fico to a hospital in the capital, Bratislava, and no such transfer is on the horizon. He reassured, "We are sure that his physical strength is so potent that we can anticipate further recovery daily, even if the journey towards full recovery will take several weeks."
On Saturday, the 71-year-old assailant, Juraj C., faced questioning at the special criminal court in Pezinok. A custody decision was issued due to the potential risk of evasion and possibility of further acts of violence. Court spokeswoman Katarina Kudjakova mentioned that the accused can appeal the court's decision.
From initial investigations by the police and the government, the man had targeted Fico due to his disapproval of Fico's government policy. Following a cabinet meeting in Handlova, Fico stepped forward to greet a crowd waiting for him, where the attack occurred. The Minister of the Interior announced that the assailant's motive was "undoubtedly political."
