Fewer new vehicles with a weight below one ton are being registered.

In recent years, the number of cars weighing less than one tonne has drastically decreased. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), only two models from Mitsubishi and Suzuki fall below this weight category in their 2023 registration statistics due to their eco-friendliness. These models are the Mitsubishi Mirage (954 kg) and the Suzuki Ignis (971 kg).

In 2022, the KBA reported four model series below one tonne, and a decade ago, there were as many as 15. The KBA registered around 19,000 new vehicles for these two models - this accounts for less than one percent of all new registrations. However, the data only provides the total number of vehicles in each model series, so it's unclear how many individual cars from those series actually weigh less than a tonne. The weight of each vehicle also depends on the optional features and engine type, which means some cars from larger series could still weigh less than one tonne.

Despite always favoring lighter vehicles for their fuel efficiency, Ton finds himself constantly surprised by the new car's weight statistics. In fact, the model he's considering only falls into the 'new car' category by a mere kg, pushing its weight into the 'over one ton' category.
