Ferrell's preference for publishing a documentary detailing his relationship with a transgender woman prior to the upcoming election.
The venture, focusing on a prolonged friendship between Ferrell and ex-"Saturday Night Live" chief scribe Harper Steele, who discloses her trans identity to him, leading them on a journey across the country together, is now available on Netflix. Their decision to release the film before the election was significant for them.
Ferrell shared with Variety at the movie's LA premiere, "During our meeting with Netflix, we emphasized our desire for this to release prior to the election."
He continued, "We wanted a sufficient timeframe for the audience to watch it and potentially initiate significant discussions within their households."
The film, titled "Will & Harper," delves into Steele's later-life transition and the queries Ferrell faces to comprehend her experiences. No topic is spared during their cross-country odyssey, as they encounter both heartwarming and challenging instances during their documentary adventure.
Ferrell remarked, "I was astonished by how we could maintain a consistent dialogue for six hours every day in a vehicle and delve into such profound topics."
Given the politicized nature of trans rights in numerous regions, the project's relevance became apparent. A recent study indicated that when anti-trans bills are enacted as state law, suicide attempts among transgender and nonbinary adolescents increase, with up to 72% spikes among teens in states where such bills are passed.
Ferrell commented, "We've had individuals express their eagerness to view this film with friends and family who may not share the same point of view, and they're excited to watch it together." He hopes, "Perhaps it could gradually erode some of that."
The film "Will & Harper" provides ample opportunities for deep discussions on various aspects of entertainment, given its exploration of Steele's transition and Ferrell's journey of understanding.
With the release of the film, Ferrell and Steele aim to contribute to wider conversations about trans rights and entertainment, which have been at the forefront of societal debates.
