Faeser vows increased law enforcement for the European Championships.

The 2024 European Football Championship comes at a time when Germany is facing multiple security challenges, from terrorism to Russian influence. But Interior Minister Faeser reassures the public: "We're ready for this."

A month before the tournament, Faeser ensures that the German population is aware of the potential difficulties ahead. "We've prepared for the possibility of Ukraine qualifying for the EURO as well," says the SPD politician. Security measures have been thoroughly discussed between federal and state governments and the participating nations. Faeser insists, "We'll do our best to protect the Ukrainian team and their fans."

Organizers expect a sizable police presence at all venues and crowded areas during the championship, from June 14 to July 14. "We're staying extra vigilant," adds Faeser. Major European cities like Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Gelsenkirchen, and Dortmund will host the events.

In light of foreign interference in major international events, the Federal Ministry of the Interior also has to monitor potential threats. "We anticipate both disinformation and cyber attacks during EURO 2024," says a spokesperson, cautioning that the Russian government is a significant player in this type of manipulation.

To prevent hooligan violence, police officers from participating countries will join the security efforts. "Over 300" foreign police officers are expected to be deployed in Germany to support railroad police and patrol duty. Border controls will be enacted at all German entry points during the games, including land, sea, and airports. The Federal Criminal Police Office and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution will assist state authorities in assessing the overall security situation.

Since the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack by Hamas in Israel, the security outlook for Islamist terrorism has grown more intense, according to German authorities. The arrests of two ISPK suspects in March are a testament to their efforts. These individuals were planning to retaliate for Koran burnings in Sweden, and although they failed to acquire weapons, they had scouted the area around the Swedish parliament.

Radical Islamists are seeking to cause disruptions in Germany before the Europeans Championships, warns the spokesperson. These threats are part of the ISPK's continued propaganda campaign to fuel unrest and encourage individual perpetrators.
