Tensions are high in New Caledonia, a French overseas territory experiencing intense protests. The situation is so dire that several legislators recommend declaring a state of emergency. President Macron holds a meeting with the National Defense and Security Council on Wednesday.
At least two individuals have lost their lives during the unrest in the French territory of New Caledonia, according to French news agencies who quoted the High Commissioner of New Caledonia, Louis Le Franc. Over 500 people sustained injuries in the demonstrations by supporters of independence, as per French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin on RTL television.
One death is reportedly caused by a bullet, though not from a law enforcement officer, as Darmanin clarified. The details of the second fatality have not yet been disclosed.
Darmanin emphasized the need for peace in a democracy. He recounted instances of violence directed towards police stations with axes and heavy ammunition. A few French MPs advocate for a state of emergency to be enforced. The curfew, in effect since Monday, continues until Thursday morning. French President Emmanuel Macron convenes the National Defense and Security Council on Wednesday.
Frustration simmers over proposed constitutional changes
The pro-independence group is upset by the proposed constitutional modification proposed by the Parisian administration. This revamp would enable approximately 30,000 French citizens residing in New Caledonia with a population of around 270,000 individuals in the South Pacific to exercise their voting rights and exert more political authority.
In the capital city of Nouméa, several properties, including public buildings and vehicles, were set ablaze. The airport La Tontouta, schools, and public facilities are temporarily closed. Citizens accumulated in front of numerous stores due to concerns about potential food shortages.
