Exploring the driving dynamics of the most recent electric SUV from the VW Group, the CUPRA Tavascan.

Cupra, the Spanish Seat subsidiary, introduces another electrified SUV variant with the Tavascan, built on their modular electric platform. NTV.de has reviewed this stylish offer in its most extravagant version.

If you find the Audi Q4 lackluster, the Volkswagen ID.4 dull, and the Škoda Enyaq too conventional, then Cupra's Tavascan might be an appealing alternative for you. This striking SUV boasts an array of visual cues, from its bold front with prominent "Cupra" branding between the hood and grille, to its distinctive bronze-colored wheels and illuminated logo on the rear.

Indulgence continues inside this SUV. The bronze color theme runs throughout the Tavascan, with numerous accent pieces presented in this tone. Observe the strip spanning the entire dashboard, extending to the inner door sides, as well as the trim around the cup holder and the seats, with the bronze hue seamlessly integrated into the upholstery through small "Cupra" logos. However, the subdued exterior paint selected for the early test vehicle, "Atacama Desert Metallic," helps temper the Tavascan's wild design, striking a pleasant contrast against the otherwise flamboyant features.

The standard equipment for the Tavascan VZ's expressive headlights includes advanced adaptive LED matrix technology.

The designers then push the envelope, before taking a step back due to budget constraints. The floating console appears modern, while the virtual instrument cluster and central screen include plug-in soft-touch controls for internal temperature - components evidently sourced from the corporate parts bin. Nonetheless, you feel remarkably spacious inside this family SUV, particularly the generous legroom in the second row, which is especially noteworthy for the model's modest height just under 1.6 meters. Additionally, the Tavascan offers ample cargo space, with 540 liters of room for luggage behind the rear seat, even in the event of full occupancy.

The Tavascan delivers a quick but not particularly sporty driving experience

Opulent design, sizable screen, and sturdy construction might make up the ideal automotive fantasies. Nevertheless, some individuals may yearn for additional practicality. Setting temperature through touch surfaces can be irritating for some.

Up for a thrilling ride? Under the hood of this VZ variant lies a familiar powertrain: 340 horsepower. Consequently, the Tavascan confidently accelerates with its strong 545 Newton meters of torque, hitting 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds. While it may not emulate the sports car persona within the Volkswagen MEB SUV stable, it does offer passengers a comparable degree of comfort, despite the officially designated "sports seats."

Moreover, the Tavascan delivers a smooth ride, rather than a firm one, with Cupra emphasizing adjectives like "gentle" and "intuitive." Nevertheless, the Tavascan handles corners deftly, thanks to its low center of gravity (batteries located in the floor). Although you perceive its weight, at approximately 2.3 tons, it doesn't compromise maneuverability.

The Stromer exhibits ample space in its rear compartment, despite not boasting an exceptionally broad wheelbase of 2.77 meters.

Currently, concerns over battery life seem to be delaying purchases, at least in Germany. Is this justified? From a charging user's perspective, the MEB generation has considerably enhanced charging efficiency. For example, the Tavascan can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 28 minutes. Though slower than refueling, it nevertheless represents a reasonable opportunity for rest and refreshment during a long journey. However, this may not be conducive to the hurried sales representative.

ntv.de could not verify this figure during a brief initial encounter with the vehicle. Nonetheless, the in-dash computer indicated an anticipated range of around 433 kilometers, placing the Tavascan slightly below the minimum WLTP factory claim of 477 kilometers. As always, driving style plays a significant role, so the sales representative may need to wait for the next generation or opt for a vehicle based on the "Premium Platform Electric," offering faster charging times.

Rear seat folding enables the conveyance of lengthy items, and this SUV exhibits comparable cargo capacity to a station wagon.

Moreover, the Tavascan is not an affordable choice. Those considering a strong VZ version will need a substantial investment – at least 60,780 euros, based on the pricing list. Although this falls below the ŠKODA Enyaq RS Coupé (63,300 euros), it represents a notable financial hurdle. Even the base Tavascan is priced at 53,240 euros, making it less than ideal for budget-conscious families. However, the VZ version includes several luxury features as standard, such as adaptive suspension control, electric tailgate, LED matrix headlights, keyless entry system, and adaptive cruise control (which accelerates and brakes autonomously).

Whether one can grow fond of the Spanish model depends largely on one's personal appreciation for distinctive design. The Tavascan certainly leaves an impression, but it may also provoke disagreement. Time will tell whether its origins from the Chinese plant in Anhui will impact the brand negatively due to the current political-economic tension. Nevertheless, it has been crafted solidly and is worth considering.

The glowing emblem of the Cupra Tavascan serves as a distinguished highlight at dusk.

If you're seeking a more unique electrified SUV option beyond Audi, Volkswagen, or Škoda, the Cupra Tavascan might pique your interest. Notably, this vehicle is built utilizing Cupra's modular electric platform, which also leads to the manufacturing of motor vehicles for their SUV range.

Although the Tavascan's base version is priced reasonably, the higher-end VZ variant, with features like adaptive suspension control and LED matrix headlights, significantly increases its cost. This brings us back to the broader context of motor vehicle manufacturing, where price points and consumer preferences play a crucial role in shaping the market.
