Ex-national goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller confirms separation
It just wasn't meant to be. After an initial separation in 2018, ex-BVB goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller and his wife Lisa gave their love another chance. The couple even had a second child a few months ago. But now the relationship is said to be over for good.
Roman Weidenfeller and his wife Lisa are going their separate ways. The former national soccer goalkeeper and long-time Borussia Dortmund keeper confirmed the separation to the "Bild" newspaper.
"It's true, Lisa and I are no longer a couple. We have separated amicably," said Weidenfeller. He and his still-wife had tried to save their marriage. "However, we unfortunately had to realize that it wasn't going to work in the long term," admits the 43-year-old.
"For us, our two children come first," Weidenfeller continues. "As parents, we will of course look after their welfare together." Daughter Luna was only born in May of this year. Son Leonard had already seen the light of day in 2016.
Met at the stadium
This is not the first separation for 35-year-old Lisa and Roman Weidenfeller. The couple announced the end of their relationship back in 2018, shortly after the goalkeeper ended his career. Back then, Weidenfeller also spoke of an amicable separation in the Bild newspaper.
Two years later, the couple made a comeback. Daughter Luna was to crown their new happiness.
Roman Weidenfeller and his Lisa met in 2010 - at the BVB stadium, where Weidenfeller was in goal. They are said to have met in a VIP lounge belonging to her father, the boss of a construction company. The couple married five years later.
Roman Weidenfeller moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in his youth. In 2002, he was then signed by Borussia Dortmund, where he would remain for the rest of his career. Between 2013 and 2015, he was part of the German national soccer team. However, he only made a few appearances for them behind regular goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
