Television Pioneer Evelin Matt Bids Farewell at 89
Evelin Matt, a groundbreaking personality in East German television, has bid adieu at the ripe age of 89. The news broke first on Facebook by the magazine "SuperIllu". Matt was the co-creator of the renowned Saturday night show "A Potpourri of Variety", which aired from 1972 to 1992 and showcased Western artists like ABBA. She paved the way for numerous TV stars in the former German Democratic Republic, including Wolfgang Lippert, who later hosted "Wetten, dass..?" on ZDF. Lippert once referred to Matt as the "formidable chief" of "A Potpourri of Variety" in the Bild newspaper.
Matt remained determined to call the show "A Potpourri of Variety", despite initial opposition. "At that time, we didn't even have color TV. The first four episodes aired in black and white," she shared with Bild in 2022, commemorating the show's 50th anniversary. Former "A Potpourri of Variety" host Dagmar Frederic (79) honored Matt in the SuperIllu Facebook post: "All my heartfelt thoughts - and I have many - are with her on her journey's end." No reason for her demise was mentioned in the post.
Despite her significant contributions to East German television through "A Potpourri of Variety" in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Evelin Matt's passing was not explained in detail in the announcement on SuperIllu's Facebook page.
Evelin Matt's influential role as the "formidable chief" of "A Potpourri of Variety" in the GDR opened doors for numerous television personalities, including Wolfgang Lippert.
