A year and a half ago, in December 2022, members of the "Last Generation" had already attempted to disrupt operations at Munich Airport.

Environmental activists bring Munich airport to a standstill.

Over the weekend, climate change activists from the group "Last Generation" caused quite a stir at Munich Airport, resulting in the airport's temporary closure. They managed to infiltrate the premises and were spotted sitting on the runways, leading to an immediate shutdown for safety concerns.

Early this morning, activists from this environmental movement entered the airport grounds, hoping to disrupt operations and spoil the start of the Bavarian Pentecost holiday. Officials confirmed that the airport's closure was a direct result of these individuals plastering themselves onto sections of the runway. It is unknown how many individuals are currently present on the premises, but one Deutsche Presse-Agentur staff member spotted at least two people sitting on the taxiways. The site was swarming with police forces.

The group intended to block one of the two runways by positioning themselves there, making it impossible to begin the Pentecost celebrations as planned. A protest banner with the message "The issue is the government, not our vacation" was seen by the reported observer. There was also another banner resembling a yellow "Exit" sign for towns, except with the term "Flugscham" (flight shame) crossed out. In its place, the activists displayed their intended target - "Government Plan". The Last Generation's press release describes this Munich demonstration as "part of a series of actions in injustice locations", adding that "these actions are taking place directly where global warming is being exacerbated". This isn't the first time that they have performed such actions at German airports.

An airport spokesperson informed that initially, any scheduled landings from 5.00 a.m. were affected by this situation. However, airport take-offs are only allowed from 6.00 a.m., meaning that most flights were limited to landings only. The affected aircraft were relocated to different airports.

The 'Last Generation' activists staged their protest against climate change at the same Munich Airport where they disrupted operations last weekend. Their actions during this current demonstration included occupying runways and displaying banners, causing another temporary closure.

During the ongoing protests at Munich Airport, spokespeople from 'Last Generation' emphasized that their actions are part of a series of protests targeting locations contributing to global warming, not just a disruption of leisure travelers' plans.
