It's time to hang up the boots for the 2014 World Cup legend: Manuel Neuer (38), Germany's long-standing national keeper, has declared his departure from international football. He announced his retirement on Instagram Wednesday afternoon (21st August), stating, "Thank you, Germany! Wearing your national team jersey has been an honor."

In the Instagram clip, the seasoned keeper shares: "Hey, fans, dear Germany football. The day inevitably arrived. Today marks the end of my journey with the German national football team." Mentioning the difficulty of this decision, he adds, "Anyone who knows me understands this wasn't an easy choice for me."

Fifteen years with the DFB team

Neuer's most memorable moment during his 15-year DFB tenure was winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Reflecting on his career, he feels "proud and grateful" for the experiences. Donning the captain's armband for seven years, he considers everything post-2014 as a bonus. The home Euro this summer was the cherry on top.

Manuel Neuer's journey with the senior national team started in 2009, facing off against the United Arab Emirates. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he became Germany's first-choice keeper. With 124 caps, he is Germany's most capped goalkeeper, and with 39 caps in European and World Championships, he holds the record for both Germany's most-capped player and goalkeeper. Known for his innovative take on the goalkeeper role, he's often recognized as one of the best goalkeepers of all time. Awarded the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2020, and named the World's Best Goalkeeper of the Decade 2011-2020, he was also recognized as the FIFA's World's Best Goalkeeper in 2020.

The future for Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich remains unclear. Currently, he's under contract with his long-time club until June 30, 2025.

Wife Anika expresses pride

Support for Manuel Neuer following his retirement announcement is pouring in through Instagram comments. While many fans are heartbroken, his wife Anika Neuer (24) is celebrating his achievements. She writes, "You're the best goalkeeper in the world! Be proud of what you've accomplished with the national team. We love you immensely."

After sharing his heartfelt retirement announcement, Manuel Neuer receives a message of support from his wife Anika, who expresses her pride in his accomplishments and lauds him as the best goalkeeper in the world. Reflecting on his love for the game, Manuel might say, "I love you, Anika, and I love football. I'll always cherish the moments we shared on and off the field during my international career."
