Elon Musk attends meeting of the Italian right wing

US billionaire Musk is a frequent commentator on political issues, such as migration policy in Europe. His opinions are often on the far right. His visit to a meeting of the Italian right is therefore hardly surprising. He recently supported them against the German government.

The high-tech entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk is to attend an important annual meeting of the ultra-right Italian ruling party Fratelli d'Italia (FdI). A spokesperson for the party of head of government Giorgia Meloni confirmed Musk's participation in the Atreju Festival in Rome.

In addition to Musk, the socialist Albanian head of government Edi Rama and the leader of the far-right Spanish opposition party Vox, Santiago Abascal Conde, are also expected to take part in the four-day event, which begins on Thursday.

Neither the FdI spokesperson nor the British government confirmed speculation that the British head of government Rishi Sunak would also attend the Atreju festival. Meloni is due to give a speech at the end of the festival.

Prominent right-wing to ultra-right-wing politicians have already attended the meeting in recent years. In 2018, for example, Steve Bannon, the former chief strategist of then US President Donald Trump, was a guest. A year later, Hungary's right-wing nationalist head of government Viktor Orban traveled to the event. However, center-left politicians have also been among the guests.

Musk is critical of sea rescue

Musk, owner of the online service formerly known as Twitter X, took sides with the Italian head of government in September in Meloni's dispute with the German government over German funding for private sea rescuers.

Meloni was a co-founder of the Atreju Festival in 1998. At the time, she was a member of a radical right-wing youth organization. The meeting, named after a central character in Michael Ende's novel "The Neverending Story", is now one of the most important political events in Italy.
