Ellen DeGeneres speaks about the harsh side of her TV show in fresh comedy performance.

Stand-up comedian Ellen DeGeneres began showcasing potential material from her upcoming "Ellen's Last Stand...Up Tour" this week, marking her first major project since the end of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in 2022. During a performance at Largo At The Coronet Theater in West Hollywood, she comically talked about being "kicked out of show business."

DeGeneres, who hosted her daytime show for 19 seasons, was part of a toxic production environment according to employees. However, her show had a cheerful vibe and a positive public image, in stark contrast. She made light of this issue within her stand-up set, saying, "I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps? Had I ended my show by saying, 'Go f**k yourself,' people would've been pleasantly surprised."

In her routine, Ellen also touched on the 1998 cancellation of her sitcom, "Ellen," after she openly discussed her sexuality.

"For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I've been kicked out of show business," DeGeneres joked. "Eventually, they're going to kick me out for a third time because I'm mean, old, and gay."

Speaking candidly to the Largo audience in a post-routine discussion, Ellen mentioned that the experience had dented her self-esteem. "People either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder," she remarked. "It was so hurtful. I couldn't do anything to make myself understand that it wasn't personal. I just thought, 'Well, this isn't the way I wanted to end my career, but this is how it's ending.' I just hated the way the show ended. I love that show so much, and I just hated that the last time people would see me was like that."

"Ellen's Last Stand...Up Tour" will span multiple dates in the spring and summer, later debuting on Netflix.
