Egypt warns it may withdraw as a facilitator in the Gaza conflict.
Both Israel and Hamas are not engaged in direct talks; instead, Egypt is serving as the intermediary for negotiations regarding potential hostage trades and a potential ceasefire.
There have been doubts cast on Egypt's mediation efforts, with allegations of altering proposed arrangements. However, if these false claims continue, it could prompt Egypt to exit its role as a mediator in the Gaza conflict entirely. Diaa Rashwan, head of the Egyptian state information service, emphasized that such actions could lead to the Egyptian side completely pulling out from assisting in the conflict.
Mediators such as Egypt, Qatar, and the US are involved in talks between Israel and Hamas since direct negotiations are not taking place. A CNN report suggested that Egypt's secret service covertly modified a ceasefire proposal previously accepted by Israel and implemented additional demands from Hamas.
During a May 6 agreement, the terms did not align with what was thought to have been presented to Hamas for consideration. This discrepancy caused significant dissatisfaction and stalled the negotiations. Egypt's information service adamantly denied the US broadcaster's allegations.
Israel remains committed to negotiations for hostage releases
The most recent negotiation round did not result in any progress. The stalemate persists despite this. Even so, Israel is determined to keep discussing the matter of releasing hostages held in the Gaza Strip. According to Israeli media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office released a statement, directing the negotiating team to persist in its attempts to secure the release of the hostages. A War Cabinet meeting previously lasted for four hours.
In a horrific incident on October 7, approximately 1,200 individuals were killed and more than 250 taken hostage in the Gaza Strip by Hamas and other radical factions. This assault on the Israeli border region ignited Israel's military operation in the coastal area. As of now, the Hamas-controlled health authority reports that over 35,700 people have been killed as a result of the offensive. Due to the complex nature of the conflict, it is challenging to independently verify the accuracy of this figure. The casualties are not differentiated between fighters and civilians.
