Drinking alcohol is forbidden on Ballermann roads.

The regulations for behaving in Mallorca's party areas are growing more severe. To combat "booze tourism," the local authorities are introducing a harsher restriction on drinking alcohol in public areas. In the near future, anyone strolling around while holding an alcoholic beverage could also be penalized.

The government of the Balearic Islands has forbidden the consumption of alcohol on the streets in the popular party destination of Ballermann on Mallorca and other party locations on Spain's Mediterranean islands. The stricter rules for etiquette were revealed in Palma. The new regulations will become effective when they are published in the official gazette. Anyone caught with an unopened can of beer on the beach or on public buildings will incur a fine ranging from 500 to 1500 euros.

In 2020, the regional government developed a legislative package to fight off "booze tourism." However, this initiative was somewhat limited by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Portions of the law are now being modified by executive order. Earlier, only drinking parties, or the consumption of alcohol in large groups, were forbidden on the open streets. The maximum number of people was not specifically mentioned. Now, it is no longer permissible to consume alcohol on the street or at the beach, even if one is alone.

Nonetheless, the ban applies mostly to the German tourist hotspot of Playa de Palma in the eastern part of Mallorca's capital and the British party district of Magaluf on Palma's western side. Sant Antoni de Portmany on Ibiza is also influenced.

The new decree is scheduled to last until the close of 2027, at which point authorities expect to be able to manage excesses without stringent measures, based on the official statement. The extent to which the police will enforce the new decree is still uncertain.
