Instead of competing for a mere bone, this dog competition is all about surfing on four paws: Several canines demonstrated balance and style at this year's dog surfing contest on a California beach, according to the event organizer and several U.S. media outlets. With life vests and creative costumes, the animals rode the waves on their boards.

They competed in various categories - big dogs, small, some solo, others with other four-legged partners. Their owners gave them a push to start, it was reported. The top dogs were awarded prizes while enthusiastic spectators watched at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica.

The event also aims to collect donations, including for animal welfare, the organizers said.

In the diverse categories, some participating dogs formed mixed-breed teams, showcasing unity and camaraderie. The event attracted a mixed crowd of surfing enthusiasts and animal lovers.
