Displeased Royal admirers express frustration over the latest Queen sculpture

Recently, a statue representing Queen Elizabeth II and her late spouse, Prince Philip, was publicly displayed in a park situated in the UK. Nevertheless, several individuals find this sculpture more disrespectful than an homage.

A new statue of Queen Elizabeth II, unveiled recently in Castlereagh, Belfast, has ignited heated discussions. The lifelike bronze statue portrays the late queen standing beside her husband, Prince Philip, and their two Corgis, crafted by local artist Anto Brennan.

"The sculpture embodies Her Majesty's grace, tenacity, and unwavering commitment to public service," shared the Mayor of Belfast on their social media platforms, attaching photos of the new statue. They also uploaded a video of the unveiling ceremony.

Comparisons to Mrs. Doubtfire?

However, many reactions on the posts are not too favorable. "I adore the concept, but doesn't it look nothing like her?" asks one commenter. Another comments, "It's more of an insult than a tribute, to be honest, appears awful indeed." A user even humorously suggests that it resembles "Mrs. Doubtfire" more than the late queen. Furthermore, the sculpture is described as "ludicrous" and "unsuitable for its purpose."

A few supporters of the statue came to its defense: "It's unfortunate that people only point out flaws in this statue without considering the time and effort this man invested in creating it," writes one user.

Council "proud" of sculpture

When contacted by "Sky News," the Mayor of Belfast stated that there has been a generally positive response to the sculpture.

"We are well-aware that art can sometimes provoke varied opinions, but stressing the importance is crucial to emphasize that the sculpture has been enthusiastically accepted by most who have viewed it in person," the statement reads. The sculpture serves as an enduring tribute to Her Majesty's outstanding legacy, and the community takes pride in having it as part of their cultural landscape.

The statue of Prince Philip was also produced by Anto Brennan and unveiled in June of the previous year.

Despite the divisive reactions online, another statue of the monarchy, specifically of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, was recently installed in a different park within the UK.

Defending the new statue, some individuals argue that it might not be an exact likeness, but the time and effort invested in its creation should be recognized.
