Displacement in Rostock

A missing girl, a case of abuse in a supposedly intact family and the great silence of the relatives: The new "Polizeiruf" with Bukow's successor Böwe is heavy fare. Read here to find out whether it's worth watching.

What happens?

At the crime scene of a murdered doctor, the Rostock investigators find irritating DNA traces: they belong to a young woman who has been missing for more than 15 years and has since been declared dead. The sudden reappearance of Jessica Sonntag - even if it is only two hairs at first - throws the parents of the missing woman completely off course: while mother Evelyn (Judith Engel) never believed her daughter was dead, father Robert (Holger Daemgen) fears the psychological consequences of another false lead.

The Rostock detectives Böwe (Lina Beckmann) and König (Anneke Kim Sarnau) laboriously reconstruct the Sonntags' family history. And finally come across a dark secret that allows only one conclusion: There will be more than one death.

What is it really about?

Rescue an accomplice: Commissioner Böwe.

Child abuse. And the vicious circle that can arise not only from the crime itself, but also from the wrong way in which relatives deal with it. The title "Nur Gespenster" (Only Ghosts) already hints at it, Evelyn actress Judith Engel puts it in a nutshell: "The main theme is repression. It's a mechanism that doesn't just occur with serious crimes such as abuse, but basically whenever people encounter something they'd rather not know. We don't want to see what we don't like and what we can't deal with. Because then we would become responsible. And it's difficult to take responsibility for something like that. Many people can't do it."

Zapping away moment?

The topic is important, but inherently so uncomfortable that dealing with it on film becomes a real balancing act. Unfortunately, in this case it is told in such an unwieldy and cerebral way that there are plenty of reasons to reach for the remote control.

Wow factor?

You'll look in vain for that in this "Polizeiruf".

How is it?

5 out of 10 points. The story about the missing Jessica and the abuse case in her family is supposed to be a wake-up call, but unfortunately has the opposite effect. After the promising first cases of Bukow's successor Böwe, "Nur Gespenster" is a real lowlight in Rostock's "Polizeiruf" history.
