- Director receives honorary award in San Sebastián
Great honor for legendary Spanish filmmaker (74). The successful director will be awarded the coveted Donostia Prize at this year's San Sebastián Film Festival for "exceptional contributions to cinema." Organizers announced this on Wednesday. In their statement, they highlighted his artistic talent and courage in approaching themes from the LGBTIQ+ universe. The award ceremony is scheduled for September 26. The trophy for his lifetime achievement will be presented by British actress Tilda Swinton (63).
Following this, his latest film "The Room Next Door," starring Swinton and Julianne Moore (63), will be screened. This is Almodóvar's first film shot in English. The film will have its world premiere next month at the Venice Film Festival. The San Sebastián Festival will take place from September 20 to 28.

The director himself has personally presented the Donostia Prize at the San Sebastián Festival to cinema legends like Al Pacino (84) and Antonio Banderas (64). He has been closely connected to the Basque city for many years. In a statement, he said: "My career began in San Sebastián in 1980, and since then, I've often returned to the festival, with or without a film." He always enjoys himself there. The city, he says, is a place with great enthusiasm for cinema.
Pedro Almodóvar is considered the most famous Spanish filmmaker of contemporary cinema. In 2000, he won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for "All About My Mother" for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2019, he was already honored with a Golden Lion for his lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival.
