Dethlef's Introductory Journey into Four-Wheel Drive Vehicles with Globebus Performance 4x4

Modern company Dethleffs acknowledges contemporary trends in the caravaning realm. Consequently, at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (until September 8), they're debuting their first all-wheel-drive motorhome. The Globebus Performance 4x4, derived from the VW Crafter, will initially appear as a series-related study, with its production soon commencing, starting with a lavishly equipped "First Edition," priced at 120,000 euros, available for purchase within the exhibition halls.

Unlike some competitors, Dethleffs, which is part of the Erwin Hymer Group, didn't opt for a Mercedes Sprinter as the base vehicle but selected the VW Crafter, specifically its 4x4 variant, demonstrating their conformity with industry trends.

Off-road capabilities, without being an expedition vehicle

The gray-hued and noticeably marked Dethleffs all-terrain model features some off-road attributes, such as 18-inch all-terrain tires on matte black rims, LED light bar, aprons, awning, ladder, and railing also in matte black. However, the Allgäu-based firm refrains from labeling it as an expedition model or a hardcore off-roader. Regardless of whether it's field paths, sandy beach approaches, gravel, or icy slopes, the 4x4 Globebus can effortlessly access remote locations.

For extended stays at picturesque, remote campsites, Dethleffs has prioritized self-sufficiency. The Globebus includes a diesel heater, and its electrically powered 131-liter compressor refrigerator draws energy from a substantial 6-pack of lithium-ion batteries offering a 263 Ah charging capacity. The only gas-operated appliance is the two-burner cooker, requiring a small 2.8-kg gas container beneath the kitchen cabinet, eliminating the need for cumbersome gas barrels and maximizing storage space.

Environmentally friendly dry toilet Clesana C1 and a water filter system also bolster independence on the road. Both will be offered as optional extras in the series version. The interior layout adheres to a standard layout, featuring a four-person lounge area upfront, a bathroom and kitchen at the vehicle's center, and individual beds at the rear. The garage beneath is lined with aluminum corrugated sheet metal and can carry up to 350 kg.

Agile and maneuverable due to its short wheelbase

Dethleffs asserts that the Globebus Performance 4x4 is adept at navigating even the most secluded and hard-to-reach locations.

The compact Crafter's short wheelbase allows the 6.85-meter-long, 2.20-meter-wide all-wheel-drive semi-integrated motorhome to maintain reasonable agility and maneuverability. However, the extended rear overhang necessitates caution while maneuvering. The powerful 120 kW/163 PS diesel engine is standard in the First Edition, coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission, differential lock, and a 5-centimeter lift. The front axle has been reinforced, and the air suspension at the rear axle enhances driving comfort.

Considering the all-wheel-drive's weight, the motorhome's permissible gross weight is 3.88 tonnes. Whether a rear-wheel-drive version will be introduced in the future, possibly in the 3.5-tonne class, has yet to be confirmed.

Dethleffs' decision to use a VW Crafter 4x4 as the base vehicle for their new all-wheel-drive motorhome aligns with industry trends, showcasing their commitment to motor vehicles that cater to contemporary caravaning needs.

The compact size and agile maneuverability of the Globebus Performance 4x4, thanks to its short wheelbase, make it an attractive choice for those seeking adventure without sacrificing ease of movement in motor vehicles.

The gas-fueled cooking appliance in the Dethleffs Globebus Performance 4x4 is the stove.
