Denzel Washington aimed to safeguard Whitney Houston during filming for "The Preacher's Wife".

The duo shared screen space in the 1996 movie "The Preacher's Wife" and forged a friendship. Tragically, Houston passed away from an accidental drowning in 2012 at the age of 48.

Washington discussed the legendary singer and actress during a career review at the recent American Black Film Festival in Miami, as reported by People magazine.

"I always felt the need to shield her," he stated. "Yeah, she wanted to project an image of toughness, but she was far from it."

The remake of the 1947 film "The Bishop's Wife" also featured Courtney Vance.

"Being her on-screen husband was a source of blissful ecstasy for me," Vance shared with People in November. "I adored her immensely. It was a transformative period in my life, and Whitney played a significant role in that."

He confessed that he wasn't privy to the severity of her struggles with substance abuse at that time.

"We were merely colleagues on set, showing mutual respect for each other," the actor explained. "But I wasn't privy to the struggles she faced in her personal life."
