Debut presentation of the progressive yet conventional Audi Q5 at a global level.

The new Q5 from Audi underwent a more evolutionary transformation, maintaining its distinctive visual aspects, while the actual revolution took place under the hood. The cover was still in place when journalists were given a sneak peek of the SUV Q5 in the studio, and it wasn't until lengthy discussions that the veil was finally lifted.

Although the outside appearance of the Q5 may not appear drastically different, new headlights with a trendy design give it a fresh look, and the taillights, with an illuminated strip across the entire trunk lid, share a resemblance to the new e-tron Q6. With the option to choose from eight different light graphics using OLED technology, the taillights can also emit optical warning signals, such as a hazard triangle, to alert drivers behind of potential hazards.

Revolution under the hood

The recently crafted Q5 variant exhibits a similar outline to its previous iteration.

Underneath the hood, the Q5 takes on a more revolutionary appearance. Following the unveiling of the A5, the mid-size SUV is based on the "Premium Platform Combustion" and primarily features gasoline and diesel engines, but offers moreoptions. The Q5 debuts with three combustion engines, including the "MHEV-Plus" hybrid system based on a 48-volt electrical system. In this context, the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline or diesel (both four-cylinder) or the 3.0-liter V6 in the SQ5 are supplemented by 24 electric horsepower and 230 Newton meters. The electric motor draws power from a 1.7 kWh battery, allowing for significant efficiency gains by recovering kinetic energy.

Both two-liter engines produce 204 horsepower - the gasoline version is available with all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive, while the diesel is only available as quattro. The top-of-the-line 367 horsepower version also falls under the quattro category. Plug-in hybrid versions with an expected electric range of around 100 kilometers will be introduced later. All variants transmit power through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Fuel consumption figures will be available after final homologation.

Distinct feature of an S-model from the Audi lineup is the quad-exhaust outlet setup.

As the Q5 is not yet dynamically available, there's more time to examine the infotainment system. The interior designers have created a consistent interior concept for the entire mid-size range, which is both attractive and provides more display than before. Digitally planned elements were already integrated into an early development phase, while the predecessor initially had a classic analog instrument cluster. Now, a large, curved panel with stylishly rounded ends takes center stage.

A second monitor unit

The new Audi Q5 showcases minimal disclosure of features.

To enhance architectural tension, Audi has opted for a display landscape that is not one piece, but rather a uniquely designed second monitor unit on the right side. This is an optional extra, as it is directed towards the passenger to prevent boredom on long journeys. However, the lack of physical buttons - such as on the steering wheel or door panels for dimming lights or adjusting mirrors - in the Q5, and instead the use of control pads with poor tactile feedback, raise some questions.

Practicality

Audi's design prioritizes practicality, opting against the use of conventional pressure-sensitive keys, which might have been more suitable.

The Q5 stands out in terms of user comfort in a different way: Its interior offers ample space on multiple levels. The SUV, measuring just under 4.72 meters in length and with a wheelbase of 2.82 meters (both figures are on par with its predecessor), impresses with generous legroom. There's also plenty of room for luggage - almost 1500 liters of cargo volume. New is the ability to not only slide the rear seat but also adjust its backrest angle. Unlike before, the luggage compartment cover can now be stored in a dedicated compartment when needed.

It's also practical that one can finally charge their mobile phone conveniently in the front thanks to a cooled inductive charging pad with 15W power. Given that the Q5 is still built in Mexico, it's no surprise that it comes with many assistance systems. We'll delve into these, as well as the configurable head-up display and the extensive multimedia system, in due course. We'll also find out how comfortable the SUV is with optional air suspension. For now, we can say that the Ingolstadt-based model, starting at 52,300 euros, is not an affordable option. Let's hope more affordable base versions follow. The market launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, so some patience is required. The late introduction is likely due to the brand's large model offensive, as the Ingolstadt-based company is currently busy renewing one model series after another.

The second row of the SUV offers ample space, making it an ideal choice for extended journeys with numerous passengers.

The new Q5 continues to impress with its Motor vehicles, as it offers multiple options for engine choices, including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid options. The hybrid system, based on a 48-volt electrical system, is a significant advancement, supplementing traditional engines with 24 electric horsepower and enhancing efficiency.

After taking a closer look at the Motor vehicles under the hood, it's time to explore the Q5's interior features. The SUV boasts ample space, with generous legroom and almost 1500 liters of cargo volume. A new feature allows the rear seat to not only slide but also adjust its backrest angle, while the luggage compartment cover can now be stored inside the vehicle when needed.
