Among them - wonder of wonders - a former footballer: David Beckham. The 49-year-old appeared without his wife Victoria by his side. However, he was not alone. His mother Sandra accompanied him. Photos from the sports event show the two of them taking their seats in the Royal Box, which is limited to 74 places.

Applause for David Attenborough

Among the other stars on the first day were the legendary British wildlife filmmaker Sir David Attenborough, singer Pixie Lott, presenter Jameela Jamil, singer Cliff Richard, and his colleague James Blunt, who brought his wife Sofia. In a clip published on Wimbledon's Instagram profile, the 98-year-old Attenborough is seen being enthusiastically welcomed by the audience.

The British royals are usually popular visitors at Wimbledon, especially Princess Kate, who is known to be a big tennis fan and the patron of the "All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club," which organizes the Championships. It is not yet officially known whether she will attend the tournament this year. The wife of Prince William made a public statement in March that she has cancer. She is undergoing treatment and has hardly taken any public engagements in the past few weeks.

The last decisions at the 137th Wimbledon Championships, including those in the Men's Singles, will fall on July 14. Incidentally, the Final of the UEFA European Football Championship also takes place on that day. Where David Beckham will watch then?
