Dairy farmers protest in Brussels over unequal wages.
Farmers from across Europe took to the streets of Brussels to demand better incomes, driving their tractors through the city. With the slogan "A fair income for farmers now!", they aimed to grab the attention of the EU Agriculture Ministers, the European Commission, and the European Parliament, according to the European Milk Board (EMB). The EMB - an umbrella organization for dairy farmers from over 15 countries - planned and organized the protest.
The demonstrators were accompanied by giant cow figures in their respective national colors, symbolizing the diversity of the movement. Unlike previous farmer protests, this one remained peaceful. The exact number of participants was not immediately known. The police advised citizens to avoid coming to the demonstration by car and use public transportation instead. Some buses were rerouted due to the protests.
German EMB Vice President Elmar Hannen highlighted the bleak situation in the dairy industry, with many farmers leaving the sector. Young people are being deterred by a lack of opportunities and see no future in becoming farmers themselves. "The invisible hand of the market is pushing prices below the cost level," Hannen said, according to a press release. As a solution, the dairy farmers are calling for an EU regulation that would prevent this from happening.

The EMB, representing dairy farmers from various nations, urged for equitable payments during the protest in Brussels, echoing the concerns of participating farmers. Despite the peaceful demonstration, the precise number of dairy farmers and their supporters among the participants remained undisclosed.
