Court demands issues for capture of Netanyahu and Hamas chief.
Recent investigations by the International Criminal Court (ICC) have found both Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Gallant accountable for severe offenses during the Gaza Strip conflict. Consequentially, the court has requested their arrest.
Chief Prosecutor of the ICC, Karim Khan, called for arrest warrants for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Hamas terrorist group's leader, Jihia al-Sinwar, as announced from The Hague. The Chief Prosecutor's role involves prosecuting crimes that transpired during the Gaza war. After thoroughly reviewing the collected and analyzed evidence, there's "sufficient cause to suspect that Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Joav Gallant bear criminal accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity," he said in The Hague.
Similarly, three Hamas leaders, Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri, and Ismail Haniyeh, are charged with the following crimes:
- Extermination as a crime against humanity
- Murder as a crime against humanity and war crime
- Hostage-taking as a war crime
- Rape and other forms of sexual violence as crimes against humanity and war crimes while in captivity
The Gaza Strip conflict began on October 7, with Hamas launching a large-scale attack on Israel. According to the Hamas-administered Ministry of Health, over 30,000 people lost their lives due to Israeli shelling and ground attacks. Hundreds of thousands of individuals were forced to flee but are frequently unable to leave the Gaza Strip. Moreover, there's a considerable shortage of food, water, and energy.
Following the initial Hamas attack, the conflict in the Gaza Strip resulted in catastrophic casualties, with around 1,200 people killed and approximately 240 people kidnapped. Netanyahu and Gallant have been accused of crimes, including:
- Using starvation as a wartime tactic
- Intentionally inflicting substantial pain or suffering on the body or health or cruel treatment
- Launching attacks against civilians in contravention of wartime rules
