- Colin Farrell speaks about his son's severe disability
Colin Farrell is known for his cool persona on screen. Now, the actor has shown a more vulnerable side. In an interview with "People" magazine, the Irish actor spoke for the first time about his son's illness. His 20-year-old son suffers from Angelman syndrome, a neurogenetic disorder that comes with developmental delays and cognitive disabilities. "I want the world to be kind to James," the actor said about his son. In his honor, and to help others, he has started his own foundation.
In the USA, it's difficult for those affected at James' age. "As soon as a child turns 21, they're pretty much on their own," he explained. "All the protections, like special education, are gone, leaving a young adult who should be an integrated part of our modern society but is often left behind."
His foundation aims to represent those affected and provide them with educational opportunities and innovative programs. "This is the first time I'm talking about it, and the only reason I'm speaking is because I can't ask James if he wants me to," Farrell said. His son James is nonverbal.
He can't speak
"I speak to James as if he's 20, fluent in English, and has age-appropriate cognitive abilities. But I can't see any response - whether he's comfortable with all this or not. So, I have to make a decision based on knowing James and what kind of young man he is and how good his heart is," the film star explained.
Farrell first revealed that his son had Angelman syndrome in 2007. He shared that James has worked hard over the years. "Repetitions, repetitions, balance, his jerky gait. The first time he fed himself, his face looked like a Jackson Pollock painting. But he does it, he eats beautifully. I'm proud of him every day because I think he's just wonderful," the 48-year-old said.

Despite the challenges, James' disability doesn't define his worth or potential. Farrell's foundation is committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring equal opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities like James.
In the absence of verbal communication, Farrell connects with James on a unique level, understanding his emotions and needs through his actions and behaviors.
