Climate protest: One protester's life in threat based on the campaign's claim [
Wolfgang Metzeler-Kick, a climate activist on an 83-day hunger strike, is reportedly in critical condition, according to his campaign "Hunger until you're honest." The 49-year-old is still conscious and aware, but physically weakened, as stated by the campaign.
Metzeler-Kick's medical volunteers have withdrawn their care for his health. Nonetheless, he remains steadfast in his decision to continue the hunger strike. These activists are residing in a camp outside of Germany's Federal Ministry of Economics in Berlin.
The action began on March 7th, with Metzeler-Kick initially abstaining from solid food, but still consuming juices, electrolytes, and vitamins. Since May 24th, he has refrained from drinking juices to further escalate the hunger strike, increasing the chances of complications, the campaign noted. In addition to Metzeler-Kick, there are currently three other men participating in the hunger strike. Two other individuals have discontinued their participation.
The activists are urging Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to issue a government declaration acknowledging the high carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and the immediate need for transition.
Scholz has no intention of meeting their demands, as confirmed by a government spokesperson. During a citizens' dialogue on Friday, Scholz himself stated, "I hope that the action is discontinued." He stressed that it is wrong "to inflict harm on others or on oneself."
