China will see Tesla's sophisticated self-driving software registration.

American EV maker Tesla is said to be planning to register a cutting-edge software for autonomous driving in China. Aside from this, they are also considering providing this Full Self Driving (FSD) software to their vehicle owners as a monthly subscription. This move comes as the company's car sales in China dropped by nearly 8% in the first four months of the year. China is Tesla's second-largest market. The company has yet to reply to Reuters regarding their FSD plans.

The FSD belongs to Stage 2 of the five stages of autonomous driving, meaning drivers still need to keep their hands on the wheel. However, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk has stated that a highly advanced software will be released soon.

With FSD passing the Ministry of Industry and Digital Technology's inspection, it would pave the way for in-depth inside testing. At that point, Tesla workers could drive on public roads across China. FSD could then be made available as an upgrade to Chinese Tesla car owners as per two anonymous sources. Currently, Tesla provides two less complex Autopilot systems as assistive tech. Prior Reuters reports suggest Tesla might also offer FSD to other car manufacturers under licensing agreements.

Tesla is going head-to-head with other companies, particularly Chinese ones like Huawei and Xpeng, who also offer what's labeled as Stage 2 systems for partially automated driving.
