The focus is on Berlin, where... - Campaign warns of imminent threat to climate hunger strikers' lives
A hunger striker who's been at it for 83 days, seeking more climate action, is now critically ill, according to the campaign "Hunger until you're honest." Wolfgang Metzeler-Kick, 49, is awake and knows what's going on, but his body is extremely weak. His medical team of volunteers has relinquished control over his treatment. Surprisingly, Metzeler-Kick's resolve remains unshaken, and he plans to persist with his hunger strike. These protesters have set up camp at the Federal Ministry of Economics in Berlin.
In the beginning, Metzeler-Kick didn't eat solid food but took juices, electrolytes, and vitamins. Then, on May 24th, he gave up juices too, intensifying his hunger strike. This raises the likelihood of complications, the campaign pointed out. Now, there are four other men, other than Metzeler-Kick, who are also on a hunger strike. However, two of them have called it quits.
The campaign's goal is for Germany's Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to issue a government declaration addressing the high level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the need for a speedier transition. But, as reported by a government spokesperson, Scholz will not accede to their requests. While commenting on the situation on Friday, Scholz mentioned at a citizen dialogue that his "greatest wish" is to have this hunger strike brought to an end. He added that using violence — against others or even against oneself — is a blunder.
