Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann finds some of the side effects of the protests at universities very painful.

Buschmann urges increased dedication from instructors following college demonstrations.

The police dispersed a pro-Palestinian demonstration at Humboldt University by order of the Berlin Senate. In response to recent protests at German universities regarding Israel's actions in Gaza, Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann has addressed the situation. He considers the lecturers responsible for the events, stating, "There should be no threats, no insults, and no endorsement of criminal acts." He hopes lecturers will foster intellectual discussion instead, where arguments matter more than volume.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been ongoing at several German universities, criticizing Israel's actions and supporting the Palestinians. On Thursday, police stepped in to end the occupation of Humboldt University by approximately 150 protesters, clearing the site. College administrators had allowed the occupation and proposed dialog between occupiers and faculty, resulting in backlash from politicians.

Buschmann underlined the responsibility Germany bears for the distress in Gaza, attributing it to the Islamist group Hamas and adding, "Those opposing this viewpoint may exercise their freedom of expression." The line is crossed, he said, when physical violence occurs, personal rights are violated, or symbols of terrorist organizations are displayed. The Minister explained that universities should be spaces of conflict resolution using rational arguments, not intimidation or fisticuffs. He affirmed the police's actions, saying, "While universities are unique settings, they're still subject to the law. University demonstrations follow the same rules as any other."

Germany has a unique duty

Buschmann emphasized Germany's special obligation towards Israel, as the country responsible for the challenges in Gaza. While those who debate this position have the right to express their opinions, "The limit is reached when violence is employed or incited, personal rights are transgressed, or symbols of terrorist groups are promoted."
