Brussels endorses billions in German assistance for freight railway transport.

Germany could provide financial support worth 1.7 billion euros to specific kinds of rail freight transport. The European Commission accepted the budget. This scheme is created to keep rail freight competitive.

The German government has targeted moving one-fourth of the country's freight traffic to rail by 2030. To advance the switch from road to rail, the German government will fund single wagonload transport and other initiatives until 2029. Regarding the specifics, Germany plans to give out 1.7 billion euros directly in subsidies spanning five years, with an annual maximum budget of 320 million euros.

Dominant in single wagonload rail freight in Germany is Deutsche Bahn. Individual freight containers are picked up from industrial clients and joined to make long trains at marshalling yards. Later, they are dismantled and shifted to their destinations onward. According to the federal government, they plan to invest around 290 million euros to promote single wagonload rail transport this year.
