This was announced by his spokeswoman Jennifer Allen to the industry portal "Variety", among others. His series colleagues openly expressed their grief on Instagram and social media.

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star Chelsea Peretti (45), who plays the role of Gina in the series, posted a portrait of Braugher on her Instagram channel, showing him in his series uniform at the fictional police station. She wrote: "I love you. I will miss your dulcet tones. I will forever consider myself lucky to have gone on this journey with you. A ringside seat. You were so funny and to me the epitome of the saying 'still waters run deep'. I will always cherish our conversations where I often stood in your doorway and stopped you from leaving, as well as the great opportunity to be your buddy. Is it strange that I also mourn what Captain Holt meant to Gina? I really hoped and knew we would see each other again. I hate that that's not true."

Melissa Fumero (41), who plays the role of Detective Amy Santiago on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", expressed her grief without words. She posted an uncommented photo of Captain Holt's empty desk on her Instagram story. The photo comes from an older Instagram post that she posted in September 2021 with the words "Nine Nine Forever". That was when the last episode aired.

Kyra Sedgwick (58) plays Madeline Wuntch, the antagonist to Captain Raymond Holt, in "Brooklyn Nine-Nine". The actress mourns the loss of her longtime series rival in her Instagram story. "My heart is broken by the news of the passing of the brilliant Andre Braugher. Sending love to his family and friends. Playing his other half on 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' will forever remain one of my career highlights."

Dirk Blocker (66), who plays Detective Michael Hitchcock on "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", also posted a photo of Braugher as Captain Holt on Instagram. "He was extremely intelligent, remarkably kind, helpful, generous and possessed a deep and extraordinary talent and had so much more to offer. I am devastated. I loved him. The nine years I was privileged to work with him and be in his presence were a true blessing. My deepest condolences go out to his family."

"You showed me what a life well lived looks like"

Terry Crew (55), who is also a member of the "Nine-Nine" police department, also sent emotional words to the fans and family of his deceased co-star via Instagram. "I can't believe you left us so soon. I'm honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and spent eight glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. It hurts. You left us far too soon. You taught me so much." He said he was grateful for Braugher's wisdom, advice, kindness and friendship. "My heartfelt condolences to your wife and family at this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like. Rest in peace, Andre. Love you, man."

Andre Braugher is survived by his wife and three sons. He married fellow actress Ami Brabson in 1991. He had three children with her, who were born in 1992, 1996 and 2003.

Braugher played one of the leading roles in the crime series "Homicide" with Frank Pembleton between 1993 and 1998. He received an Emmy nomination for this in 1996 and won the award in 1998. He played another police officer, Captain Raymond Holt, in the sitcom "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" from 2013 to 2021. He was nominated four times for an Emmy for this role. Braugher previously won his second Emmy for his performance in the 2006 miniseries "Thief". From 2008 to 2011, he was celebrated for his performance in the series "Men of a Certain Age".
