Thousands upon thousands of cattle succumb to bovine tuberculosis in the UK, with badgers identified as its carriers. Consequently, these animals are exterminated as a control measure. However, a renowned musician seeks to challenge this practice.

Brian May from Queen (77) supports badgers. As stated to the BBC, May believes defending badgers from culling is equally important as his passion for music. Since 2013, over 230,000 badgers have been eliminated in England, according to Badgers Trust, with the creatures being accused of spreading bovine tuberculosis, causing the demise of tens of thousands of cows yearly.

May and a team joined forces to explore the distribution of bovine tuberculosis for a TV documentary. "The spread of bovine tuberculosis occurs through cow-to-cow interaction and is linked to poor hygiene conditions," said Sir Brian. "It's an internal issue within the herd."

May and his research associates discovered that the bacteria were abundant in cow manure, which could pollute the animals' feed and water. "Back in the day, preventing badgers involved keeping them out, but now it's about stopping the spread of manure so they don't infect each other," said May. "It's an internal issue within the herd." However, some specialists argue that badgers contribute to the transmission.

The licenses for badger culling expire in 2026. Despite objections from conservationists and animal welfare groups, the new Labour government has no intentions of advancing the deadline set by the previous Conservative government. May attributed this to the Agriculture Ministry’s guidelines, which label culling as useful. "Regrettably, this advice is incorrect and requires modification," stated May.

people have expressed concerns about the impact of badger culling on the animal population. Many people, including Brian May, believe that badgers are not primary contributors to the spread of bovine tuberculosis.
