Borrell urges enforcement of ICJ decision on Israeli offensive in Rafah.
Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy chief, has urged for the execution of the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) order to stop Israel's attack on Rafah in the southern region of Gaza. Borrell spoke before a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, stating, "We must not only show respect but also demand the implementation of the court's ruling." He noted the challenge of enforcing this decision by the international community.
Despite a ruling from the highest UN court on Friday mandating an end to Israel's offensive, Israel persists in bombing targets in Rafah. The court's decision was made due to the potential consequences of the attacks, which could lead to the "total or partial destruction" of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip. Israel dismissed the court's analysis and indicated no intention of altering its actions in Rafah. Although the ICJ's decisions are binding, the court lacks the authority to enforce them.
The EU foreign ministers will meet with journalists from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar on Monday to discuss the potential for a two-state solution after the end of the hostilities in Gaza.
"We will listen to their views on how to support Palestine and the Palestinian authorities and revive the political process," Borrell stated.
Borrell also mentioned the potential reinstatement of an EU mission to observe the Rafah crossing on the border between Gaza and Egypt. He expects a preliminary mandate from the foreign ministers and ministers to create a plan for the mission, according to his statement.
