Borrell advocates for employing Western weapons against Russian targets.

The EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell recently spoke in support of utilizing Western weapons against Russian targets in the ongoing Ukraine war. He highlighted that this is permissible under international law and doesn't contradict any regulations. As attacks on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, continue from Russian territory, Borrell emphasizes the rising significance of lifting national limitations.

During a meeting of EU defense ministers in Brussels, Borrell mentioned Germany's hesitance, citing the potential escalation with Moscow as a concern. However, he underlined the importance of considering the escalation risk along with Ukraine's right to defend itself. The SPD, Union, and Greens in the Bundestag, as well as Italy in the EU and NATO, have also expressed similar sentiments.

Despite pressure from various politicians, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz continued to oppose the use of German weapons against Russian targets. He expressed his desire to avoid a potential war between Russia and NATO. Möller, the Parliamentary State Secretary for Defense, reaffirmed the sovereign decision of the German government regarding the restrictions on weapons usage.

Prior to this, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg urged all allies to reconsider the possibility of utilizing weapons they supplied to Ukraine against Russian targets. "Ukrainians' hands are tied by the red lines of some NATO countries," he stated.

The shifting stance among influential figures in the EU and NATO shines a light on the delicate balance between supporting Ukraine and avoiding conflict with Russia.
