Biden declares that Donald Trump endangers the democratic system.
In a significant turn of events, Donald Trump has become the first American president in history to be found guilty in a criminal trial. The former president has not taken this news lying down and has begun to fiercely oppose the justice system. Currently in office, President Joe Biden has voiced his concerns over these developments and the threat they pose to democracy.
In the wake of Trump's conviction on all counts of the hush money case, President Biden expressed his worry over the former leader's actions. On his X account, he wrote, "Trump is a danger to democracy." He further explained that Trump had previously questioned the electoral system, the legal system, and now it's time to stop him. To support his stance, Biden asked his followers to contribute to his campaign.
In what could only be described as a landmark moment in US history, the 77-year-old Trump was found guilty in all 34 counts of the hush money case on Thursday. The sentencing will take place on July 11th. Trump has dubbed the trial proceedings against him as "unfair." Addressing a crowd in New York City, he stated, "You've seen what happened to some of the witnesses on our side - they were crucified." He also hurled insults at Biden and his allies, calling them "sick" and "fascists."
Biden kept quiet until now
The news of Trump's conviction prompted an outpouring of donations for the former president, amounting to millions within hours. In a speech on Friday, Trump announced that he had raised a whopping $39 million (€36 million), mostly from small donors. However, earlier in the day, his campaign team had reported slightly lower amounts, stating that $34.8 million had been donated since the verdict.
The White House maintained its stance on respecting the rule of law, and President Biden had avoided commenting on Trump's legal woes up until this point. He did not want to give the impression that these proceedings were politically motivated.
Although being charged in this court case is a major setback for Trump, he still has three more criminal proceedings on the horizon. These include his efforts to overturn his election loss to Biden in 2020, and his taking of secret government documents to his private residence in Florida. The exact timing of these trials has yet to be determined.
