Bicycles are now allowed to have turn signals.

In the near future, bicycles will be allowed to have turn signals. On Friday, this amendment was approved by the Bundesrat, modifying the existing traffic laws.

State Secretary for Transport, Oliver Luksic (FDP), expressed his delight with the resulting changes. He believed this would improve safety on the roads and make it easier for cyclists to be seen while making turns. Not only does it enhance safety, but it also serves as a significant boost for the bicycle industry, as they can now plan and bring out such products.

Prior to this, only multi-track bicycles and those with a superstructure, like rickshaws, where the rider's hand signals were partially or fully concealed, were allowed to have turn signals.

In early 2022, the Federal Ministry of Transport released a new regulation. They were concerned about a growing number of accidents involving pedelecs, which are bicycles equipped with an auxiliary motor. Currently, for indicating a turn, cyclists are required to remove their hands from the handlebars, which can lead to a loss of balance and altered braking performance. Turn signals could be used as a substitute for hand signals to make turning smoother and safer.

The Federal Council's approval of turn signal allowance for bicycles on Friday will make it mandatory for bicycle manufacturers to incorporate this feature in their designs. As a result, cyclists using the path will be more visible to other road users during turns, potentially reducing accidents.
