Pop icon Beyoncé (42) seems to be joining the artists standing up against unauthorized use of their tunes by Donald Trump's (78) presidential campaign. The controversy revolves around her track "Freedom" from the 2016 album "Lemonade," which Kamala Harris (59), the Democratic hopeful, uses with permission in her campaign.
As per Rolling Stone, Trump's representative Steven Cheung uploaded a video of Trump on the X platform on August 20th, exiting a plane set to "Freedom." Beyoncé's team reportedly handed the Trump campaign a cease and desist notice following this post, which is now missing from Cheung's profile.
In July, Beyoncé gave Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, permission to use "Freedom" for her campaign. Harris and her running mate Tim Walz (60) published an ad with the tune on Monday (August 17th).
Trump's presidential campaign has often faced scrutiny for using songs. Artists like Adele (36), The White Stripes, Bruce Springsteen (74), Neil Young (78), and Elton John (77) have publicly denounced this practice and forbidden further use. Most recently, Isaac Hayes' family announced plans to sue Trump and his team for over 130 instances of copyright infringement, claiming unauthorized use of "Hold On (I'm Coming)" at campaign events between 2022 and 2024.
Céline Dion (56) also recently voiced her disapproval. Through a social media message on August 10th, she made it clear that a Montana event's use of "My Heart Will Go On" was unauthorized and expressed her intention to halt future instances.
The Trump campaign used He's song "Freedom" without permission in a video, prompting Beyoncé's team to issue a cease and desist notice. This incident follows multiple instances of artists objecting to the use of their songs by Trump's campaign.
