Berlin assembles additional 500 million aid for Kiev.
Ten days before the NATO summit, Germany's Defense Minister Pistorius travels to the city of Odessa in Ukraine. He announces an upcoming aid package, highlighting Germany's commitment to long-term support.
Minister Pistorius disclosed a new German weapons package worth half a billion euros to support Ukraine's defense efforts. During a meeting with his colleague Rustem Umjerow, he said, "We're here to assist in your battle for defense." Already, some of this aid is ready for delivery.
The package includes:- A large quantity of Iris-T SLM missiles for long-range air defense systems- A smaller number of SLS missiles with shorter ranges- Drones for reconnaissance and combat in the Black Sea- Urgently needed spare parts such as artillery system replacements and combat tank engines- One million rounds of ammunition for small arms- From next year, 18 new self-propelled howitzers of the latest model will be delivered.
Minister Pistorius also mentioned Germany's commitment to train Ukrainian technicians through industrial programs and fund secure satellite communication.
Preparing for a long-term war
Pistorius further revealed that Germany will provide Leopard A1 tanks and Leopard II A4 tanks from Spain. While Spain will donate 19 tanks, Germany plans to invest one million euros per tank each for restoration, maintenance, and repair. The Minister added that Germany will also supply Marder armored fighting vehicles, armored combat vehicles, air defense vehicles, and equipment for command and control in electronic warfare.
According to Pistorius, these details emphasize that Germany is not just providing what is currently available. Instead, he stressed the importance of sustainability by ordering supplies that will only be delivered in the coming years. He believes they must set these plans in motion now to sustain support in this war "for a longer period of time."
This marks the third visit to Ukraine by Pistorius since the Russian attack war began in February 2022. To ensure security, this trip was kept secret until just before his departure from Odessa due to increasing Russian air attacks. Russia has been attacking Ukraine extensively for months, resulting in many lives lost and critical infrastructure destruction.
